What inspires someone to write certain lyrics for songs.

Sometimes it is about something that happened in their lives.

Other times it is about an event that has happened.

Some of these lyrics stay etched in our minds forever.

“Something touched me deep inside”

“The day the music died”

Such a classic line from the Don McLean song American Pie.

On February 3 1959, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper were all killed in a plane crash.

This was part of the inspiration for this number 1 hit.

“Broken bottles under children’s feet”

“Bodies strewn across the dead end street”

These lyrics are from one of the greatest songs recorded by U2.

It tells the story of the the Bloody Sunday incident in Derry when British troops opened fire, shooting and killing 26 people. These were not only civil rights protestors but also innocent bystanders as well, all of them unarmed.

“We’re on an open bed truck on the highway”
“The rain is coming down and we’re on the run”

The Fray wrote and recorded this song after Isaac Slade visited and spoke to a variety of people whilst he and a friend travelled through South Africa and Rwanda. The song is about the Rwandan Genocide which claimed the lives of 800,000 people in just 100 days.
